TRANSLATION review: I have owned and “read through†quite a few other Bibles (KJV, NIV, Catholic, ESV, Message). This is my first experience with the CSB. It is very close to the ESV translation. I’ve worked through in a backwards way by starting with very challenging versions when I was younger, and now as an adult am really enjoying the new, modern translations. I won’t debate too much about the “authenticity†of each translation to the “original textâ€. My opinion is that if you don’t understand what you are reading, you won’t keep reading. If these new “modern†translations get you reading God’s Word, that’s the very first baby step. (Example: I don’t introduce my children to Shakespeare by making them read the original work, but instead give them reimagined children's books with few words, in modern translation, and lots of pictures. When they are ready, we will move on to a youth version, then the originals.)QUALITY review: I purchased the grey linen with sleeve. It all seems very well made, quality materials. Sleeve is sturdy and will definitely hold up to lots of use. The Bible slides in and out of sleeve with just a bit of friction, but no need for pulling or shaking to try to work it out. If you put paper notes in your Bible it may eventually not fit well in the sleeve. The Bible itself seems very sturdy. The spine seems strong. The linen is a beautiful grey and feels smooth. The writing is a pretty gold that catches the light and shines. The Bible lays flat when opened and does not seem to pull at the spine like it is stressing it. As many other reviews have stated, the pages are thin; however, they are NO MORE thin than every other Bible I own! I think what is throwing some people off is the different colors, extra characters, and art beyond just letters, along with lots of white space on pages. It is not a traditional lay out with lines of words matching up on every page. The paper feels buttery soft. Pages DO NOT feel like they will rip easily. A few pages were stuck together but pulled apart easily. The two sewn-in satin ribbon page markers are a nice touch, especially being two different colors.CONTENT review: As stated, I own or have looked through many Bibles. Children’s Bibles are a great start to reading the Bible because of the artwork and story-like translation grabbing children’s attention. Study Bibles are great for in-depth study with all the references, maps, etc. I feel like this Bible is a great blending of those two ideas. The artwork and beauty of this book make you want to open it and turn the pages, the translation makes it easy to understand what you are reading and to want to keep reading, and all the extra information such as the one page devotionals, key verses, charts, timelines, reading plans, etc. are very helpful and informative to help you delve deeper into the Word.Is this a “perfect†Bible? No! Like people, there is no such thing. If a Bible had everything in it that I personally wanted, it would be as big as a table and as thick as a tree trunk! However, this is the most beautiful personal Bible I have owned or even seen, to date. I will be buying one for each of my children as soon as I can. The SRT app, devotionals, artwork, and this Bible are all being used to draw people closer to God. If you are drawn to this Bible, I advice you to buy it. You can return it or gift it in the off chance it’s really not what you were expecting.
I originally ordered two as Mother's Day gifts, but then I couldn't resist and purchased one for myself. I'm SO glad I did. I've only received the grey linen so far, but this Bible is truly gorgeous in all things. It most definitely is designed with women in mind. The Bible itself comes in a hard case and jacket, making it perfect for gifting. I cannot do the pages justice though, so I took quite a few pictures.
The pages while thin and a partially translucent are literally not even a reason to demote this a star. There are lots of thing I wish this bible had, tabs for the books and an entire dictionary of the Hebrew language in the back, maybe throw in that portrait of Jesus by Akaine. But the love and care, and ultimate dedication that went into this bible is perfect in and of itself. It has maps, and study guides and even little mini lessons (each very much unique and heartfelt) I also love that Jesus's words aren't in red, but bold. I ordered this in the beginning of May to signify a new chapter of a new job...and a new life. Over two months went by after I confirmed that (even though it would be late) I still wanted it. I don't find it even the least bit surprising that this bible arrived the Monday before I lost my brand new job...new beginnings indeed. I am incredibly blessed to have the SRT bible for this new (albeit painful) journey of restoration. I could not be better equipped ✨💛
Purchased the grey and poppy linen and they are beautiful. I went to barns and nobles and this one stood out to me the most, but it costs $50 in the store. Immediately checked amazon and sure enough purchased it for $25 and got it within two days. I like that it includes a couple of in depth paragraphs about certain scriptures and little detail here and there I like as well. The only negative is that the paper is very thin. Like one of the reviews that showed if you write on it, you can see it through the other side of the paper.. I really intend to do a lot of writing inside so not sure how I will what I’m gunna do about that.
My favorite translation has been the ESV in the past few years, and this one is just as good if not better. A very faithful translation that (in my opinion) may surpass the ESV solely due to rewording of some awkward phrases. I also love the creative and artistic approach that this team takes while also supplying beneficial commentary and background.One thing to note, and the only reason that I am rating it 4 stars:I guess I maybe should have known this prior to ordering, but it is not able to be imprinted/engraved. I contacted both the SRT team and the local LifeWay store. LifeWay said they don't do it for that material, and SRT never gave me a clear answer on whether it could or not. I figured that the creators of this book would be aware if it was possible at all, but I guess not.
