I like using books like this on stretching because part of my physical therapy is learning how to adapt stretches into something I can do. Of course, my physical therapists can always help me figure this out if I'm stuck. This book gave me some new stretches to work on and aspire to, which is always valuable to me. There's only one picture per stretch, but some of of them would benefit from having more to illustrate changes in positioning. I'm blind and so rely on text descriptions, but my SO relies on the pictures to tell me if it looks right. I received this at a free or discounted rate in exchange for my honest review. At the age of 37 I have noticed a lot of changes in my body that I am not 100% happy with, and one of those changes is a loss of flexibility. I am a fairly active person, but I have noticed that my muscles get sore and tired a lot faster than they used to. I really enjoy this book. It explains the importance of stretching, the different types of stretching, the benefits of stretching, how to relieve muscle pain and so much more. The stretches that are detailed in this book have pictures to accompany them, which is helpful but if you are like me you may want to look up a video online of any of the more complicated stretches to make sure that you are doing them right. This is a fact-filled book that really very extensively covers stretching. The authors don't just tell their audience how to perform stretches. Throughout the book there are medical facts, and what your muscles, tendons and ligaments do, the science and reasons to warm up and cool down before exercising. The authors do an excellent job of explaining why your body needs to stretch, how to stretch, how not to stretch and how to use resistance or ballet bands to stretch more effectively.There are also specific stretches to perform, along with some pictures and a written description of the stretch.This is a fascinating book. I knew some of the anatomy and medical issues covered in this book and many were new to me. I have a greater understanding of the mechanisms of the body while working out, stretching and the importance of warming up, cooling down and preparing your body to allow it to give the best it can.Great information for everyone from pro athelete to someone looking to get in shape to someone who maybe justs wants to stretch to improve circulation, flexibility and health. 4 stars, I would have liked more pictures showing the stetches in greater detail. I was introduced to stretch bands by physical therapy after my back surgery. I am no a ballerina but bought this book to see if I can expand my own stretching routine with new ideas. Indeed, this book contains many new to me position of stretch bands.This book as aimed at athletes and ballerinas who are in much better shape and more flexible than I am. Some of the positions are too advanced for me, but many are not. I appreciated that exercises had images to demonstrate the proper position.Ali Julia review
A well written book for anyone who does any activity at all. Good explanation of how stretching works, the difference between static and dynamic stretches and the importance of stretching and warming up before any physical exercise. I intend to use this as a resource to help my karate students to stretch better before and after class.
This is a really helpful book for anyone trying to get back into shape safely. I danced for years but have been lax in keeping up with it over the past few years, so I bought a stretch band and got this book to help ease me back in. I have to say the stretches I've tried so far work really well and the writing/instructions are very helpful and clear. I definitely recommend it.
