Interesting reportage of a horrific battle where the VC/NVA bloodied Army attempts to assault defensive positions that were to strong. It was wrenching to read the suicidal attempts of individuals to assault bunkers that enjoyed interlocking fields of machine gun fire.My takeaway is that this was a major tragedy for the US Army and that there were serious problems with command and the decisions made where they doubled down on a losing hand. All the same, bravery was the rule and the fighting was savage. The writing was good and I'm glad I bought the book. Its short and reading it went fast.

I have probably read over 300 books on the subject of the Vietnam War, and this is one of the best! This book tells the story from the combat infantryman's angle. From late fall 1967 through the spring of 1968, the six bloodiest months of the Vietnam War. I couldn't put this book down.Lots of great information, from what the average Infantry soldier carried, to the conditions on the battlefield. There is also good information onthe NVA/VC. Bunker construction, tactics, uniforms, etc. One of the best all round books on Vietnam combat!

This book lacked personality. This work is simply a compilation of engagements which resulted from command decisions and does not give the reader an opportunity to bond with the soldiers. Had i realized it was written in the third person, I would not have picked it up.

At a certain point you think this could make a terrific movie. But it can't,it is just back to back action that never stops. The author, a Inf company CO,follows two distinguished Infantry outfits in 6 months of the Tet offensive in Vietnam. It reads in a technical manner as after action reports, from which a lot was back filled. It also gives a vivid picture of the tactics of the Viet Cong, and the NVA. No longer will you view then as just guys in black PJs, but crack professional soldiers, It doesn't pull punches.Mistakes as well as incredible well planned US Army successes. "Just the facts,Mame" The bravery and fortitude of the American gruntsis to leave you breathless.

Author makes Forrest Gump look skeptical. And citing so many of the finest of our youth slaughtered in LBJ's War. Those poor bastards who were there (and abouts) will probably agree. God bless them. But will give author credit for excellent military organizational compilation and detail.

Found Days of Valor and couldn't put it down. It is an accurate and moving account of the day to day operations in III Corps. I served with B Battery 2nd Battalion 35th Artillery at FSB Concord (although by then LIB had moved south) and Horseshoe Bend across the street from the Fishnet factory in Nov - January 1968. At Horseshoe bend we saw the day to day departure of the LIB Infantry units as they deployed into the Delta. We fired countless fire missions for them as they did their work. The description of the operations and tactics are a carbon copy of what I witnessed in Tet of 69 and the months thereafter. For the student of history this is a great primary source account of the unvarnished experience of what happened. Robert Tonsetic did a superb job of researching and recounting an important part of a story that needs to be told.

This is one of the finest books of the Vietnam War. It focuses on a six month window of heavy Infantry combat involving the 199th Light Infantry (Seperate) Brigade. The Tet Offensive was a decisive period of the war. Col. Tonsetic painstakingly weaves personal stories of Infantryman throughout the whole book. His book uses mulitple soldiers, eye witness accounts, of enemy contact. It gives the reader a whole picture of how each event unfolded as seen by mulitple participants. Col. Tonsetic has amassed a verifiable masterpiece of Infantry combat. It's a true story of American soldiers who performed their extreme duties under very difficult circumstances. If you want to read a book about Vietnam that is absent of the political spin about the war, this is the book. It is a must read and valued addition to American military history.

I was there, well not exactly there but a recon team that confirmed locations, movement and armaments. To really know is to be there. The gut wrenching story of those that served. This is just a glimpse of a point in time.
