About the Author

DR. JERRY VINES (B.A., Mercer University; Th.D., Luther Rice Seminary) retired as pastor of First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida in 2006, where he served for 40 years. He served two terms as president of the Southern Baptist Convention. Jerry is author of a number of books including Power in the Pulpit: How to Prepare and Deliver Expository Sermons, and A Practical Guide to Sermon Preparation. He and his wife, Janet, have four adult children and five grandchildren.JIM SHADDIX (BS, Jacksonville State University; M.Div., D.Min., Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; Ph.D., New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary) serves as Professor of Preaching at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC, occupying the W. A. Criswell Chair of Expository Preaching. He has pastored churches in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Colorado, and also served as Dean of the Chapel and Professor of Preaching at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans, LA. I ordered this book in part because Jim Shaddix was my preaching professor years ago at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (NOBTS). The things I learned from him were extremely valuable and have shaped the way I preach to this day. I'm glad I took the time to learn from him again (as well as from the co-author, Jerry Vines) through reading this book. One thing I've noticed about preaching books is that many of them start to sound the same, especially if you have been blessed with the opportunity to pursue theological studies. Don't get me wrong: it's always helpful to go back the basics (proper exegesis of the text, etc.). But Progress in the Pulpit helps the preacher consider how to grow and improve as an effective communicator of God's word. I would highly recommend it for preachers/pastors who already understand the foundations of biblical preaching but wish to become increasingly effective at it for the glory of God.

Excellent resource. I found this to be a very helpful and practical followup to the authors' classic Power in the Pulpit. Based on the premise that one should never stop growing in their field of ministry, it is a beneficial text for both experienced and inexperienced preachers. Drawing from their personal ministry and study, each author presents six chapters dealing with the various stages of a sermon, from preparation to delivery. Both of these men have years of experience in preparing and presenting sermons. What a great opportunity to learn from to skilled, experienced voices!

"Progress In The Pulpit" by Jerry Vines and Jim Shaddix is a great read for any preacher or teacher, seasoned or just starting out. Just over 200 pages, the book is a helpful and informative read, may be completed in a few sittings, and smoothly transitions from chapter to chapter. Some of the topics covered include:1. A definition of expository preaching and two ways it can help re-create people into Christ's image.2. What happens in the preacher's private devotion life is often the secret of success or failure in his public life.3. Be sure to give appropriate credit when using someone else's sermon/teaching points.4. The ability to preach the gospel comes from God and not our flesh.5. 5 benefits of planning your preaching.6. 3 suggested areas of preaching (expository, doctrinal, prophetic).7. Allow some margin for interruptions (local, national, crisis, etc.) into your preaching plan.8. 5 principles for connecting preaching and disciple-making.9. No excuse for being bored or boring when preaching the Bible!10. Suggestions for teaching the congregation how to worship as you speak and 3 parts of effective preaching.Will be a great present and future reference for future lessons or sermons. I've had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Vines preach when he was in Indian Trail NC and reading this title gave me many great insights on preparing for future speaking engagements (Sunday School, worship service Bible study, etc.). Highly recommended along with "Power In The Pulpit". Will be reading both titles yearly from now on.I was given a review copy by Moody Publishers in exchange for a fair review.

Years ago, I read "Power in the Pulpit," and it was fantastic. This book is not. "Power" really created a whole system of preaching, while this book felt more like the authors were making comments about the direction of preaching, or current developments in preaching. It was more like essays on the art of preaching. Of course, this does not mean there was not valuable wisdom in the book. The authors make some needed and astute observations. These are two men who are truly students of preaching. These guys too have the advantage of age and wisdom. Numerous times the authors push back on some of the forms of preaching that glorifies the speaker and not the Savior. One of the needed pieces of wisdom is the hypercritical nature of preachers. Sometimes we are the hardest on one another. Preachers will tear down others to build themselves up. Another good insight was the nature of the feedback we get. Sometimes it is over the top nice, and other times it is over the bottom negative. Usually, we are in the middle. This is a good book for thinking through a few areas of preaching, but if you are going to read one book from these guys, stay with "Power in the Pulpit." That book is fantastic. This book is good.

Vines & Shaddix did an exceptional job on growing in your preaching. This book is good for both beginners and seasoned preachers. There are three parts in this book: Defining the Sermon, Developing the Sermon, and Delivering the Sermon. This will book will help any preacher grow in their faithfulness to God's Word.Chapter 2 deals with having a devotional life and being a holy man of God. They expound on the ongoing communication between the preacher and God. God speaks to us through His Word and we speak to him in prayer. Prayer is a difficulty duty because of the various distractions but it can be accomplished when done scriptural. Prayer and a constant digest of God's Word are both needed for effective preaching. Without spiritual disciplines, preachers will not minister in the Spirit but in the flesh.The book continues by talking about pulpit discipleship. One of the major points that I enjoyed is preaching matures communities as well as individuals. God uses preaching to help bring spiritual maturity to any group of people. Satan fights the preaching of the Word because the preaching of the Word unveils his plans and reveals the Lord Jesus.I cannot recommend this book enough. This book will deal with the preacher as well as the sermon. You can't help but grow after carefully and prayerfully study this book along with scriptures and applying what you have read.I was given a review copy by Moody Publishers in exchange for an honest review.
